Halves = When we divide something into 2 equal parts
Halves: Two equal parts of a whole object or group. Each part is called "one-half" and written as 1/2.
- Take one whole object
- Cut it into 2 equal parts
- Each part is 1/2 of the whole
- Together, the 2 halves make 1 whole
We have 1 whole pizza
We cut the pizza into 2 equal pieces
Each piece is 1/2 of the whole pizza
2 pieces of 1/2 each = 2 × 1/2 = 1 whole
- Half a pizza
- Half an apple
- Half a sandwich
- Half a cookie
Start with 1 whole apple
Split the apple into 2 equal pieces
Each piece represents 1/2 of the whole apple
2 pieces of 1/2 = 1 whole apple
- Top number: How many parts we have
- Bottom number: How many equal parts in total
- Read as: "One-half" (1 out of 2 equal parts)
• Numerator (top): Shows how many parts we're talking about
• Denominator (bottom): Shows total number of equal parts
• Halves: Always have 2 as the denominator
• Equal parts: All parts must be the same size
Let's practice with different examples:
- 1 half = 1/2
- 2 halves = 2/2 = 1 whole
- 3 halves = 3/2 = 1 1/2
Just 1 piece of 1/2 = 1/2
2 pieces of 1/2 = 2/2 = 1 whole
3 pieces of 1/2 = 3/2 = 1 1/2
