Separate Whole Numbers and Fractions
Identify the whole number and fractional parts in each mixed number.
Add Whole Numbers
Add the whole number parts together separately.
Find the LCD (Least Common Denominator)
Identify the smallest common multiple of the denominators.
| Multiples of 3 | Multiples of 4 |
|---|---|
| 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, ... | 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ... |
LCD = 12 (smallest common multiple)
Convert Fractions to Equivalent Forms
Change fractions to equivalent forms with the LCD as denominator.
Add the Converted Fractions
With like denominators, add the numerators and keep the denominator.
Combine Results
Combine the sum of whole numbers with the sum of fractions.
- Add whole numbers: \(2 + 1 = 3\)
- Find LCD of 3 and 4: LCD = 12
- Convert fractions: \(\frac{1}{3} = \frac{4}{12}\), \(\frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{12}\)
- Add fractions: \(\frac{4}{12} + \frac{3}{12} = \frac{7}{12}\)
- Combine: \(3 + \frac{7}{12} = 3\frac{7}{12}\)
- Add whole numbers: \(1 + 2 = 3\)
- Find LCD of 5 and 3: LCD = 15
- Convert fractions: \(\frac{2}{5} = \frac{6}{15}\), \(\frac{1}{3} = \frac{5}{15}\)
- Add fractions: \(\frac{6}{15} + \frac{5}{15} = \frac{11}{15}\)
- Combine: \(3 + \frac{11}{15} = 3\frac{11}{15}\)
- Add whole numbers: \(3 + 2 = 5\)
- Find LCD of 2 and 6: LCD = 6
- Convert fractions: \(\frac{1}{2} = \frac{3}{6}\), \(\frac{1}{6} = \frac{1}{6}\)
- Add fractions: \(\frac{3}{6} + \frac{1}{6} = \frac{4}{6} = \frac{2}{3}\)
- Combine: \(5 + \frac{2}{3} = 5\frac{2}{3}\)
- Add whole numbers: \(2 + 1 = 3\)
- Find LCD of 8 and 4: LCD = 8
- Convert fractions: \(\frac{3}{8} = \frac{3}{8}\), \(\frac{1}{4} = \frac{2}{8}\)
- Add fractions: \(\frac{3}{8} + \frac{2}{8} = \frac{5}{8}\)
- Combine: \(3 + \frac{5}{8} = 3\frac{5}{8}\)
- Add whole numbers: \(1 + 2 = 3\)
- Find LCD of 3 and 4: LCD = 12
- Convert fractions: \(\frac{1}{3} = \frac{4}{12}\), \(\frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{12}\)
- Add fractions: \(\frac{4}{12} + \frac{3}{12} = \frac{7}{12}\)
- Combine: \(3 + \frac{7}{12} = 3\frac{7}{12}\) cups total
Write out multiples of each denominator until you find a common one.
Example: LCD of 6 and 8
- Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, ...
- Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, ...
- Smallest common multiple: 24
Find prime factors of each denominator and multiply the highest powers.
Example: LCD of 6 and 8
- 6 = 2 × 3
- 8 = 2³
- LCD = 2³ × 3 = 24
To convert a fraction to an equivalent form with a new denominator:
\(\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \times n}{b \times n}\) where n is the conversion factor
Example: Convert \(\frac{2}{3}\) to twelfths
- New denominator: 12
- Current denominator: 3
- Conversion factor: 12 ÷ 3 = 4
- \(\frac{2}{3} = \frac{2 \times 4}{3 \times 4} = \frac{8}{12}\)
- Verify that denominators are the same before adding numerators
- Confirm that the LCD is truly the smallest common multiple
- Check that conversion factors were applied correctly
- Ensure the final answer is in simplest form
